December 14, Biomass to Energy: An Emerging Industry, Great Lakes Science Center

On Monday, December 14, NorTech’s Advanced Energy Speaker Series will present a discussion on “Biomass to Energy: An Emerging Industry” at the Great Lakes Science Center auditorium from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Biomass to energy applications are gaining momentum in the marketplace as a long term solution to reducing consumption of traditional energy sources. A panel of experts will provide an overview of the emerging US biomass industry as a source of clean, renewable energy and products. NASA Glenn Research Center and Quasar Energy Group (formerly Schmack BioEnergy) will share examples of how they are researching, developing and implementing biomass to energy solutions here in Northeast Ohio. Panelists will be available to address your interests, questions and concerns during an open Q&A session. This event is free and open to the public, however registration is required.

Obama Advisor to Speak at MIT Club Dinner in Cleveland, December 16

Professor Ernest Moniz, the Director of the MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI), advisor to President Obama (PCAST), and the Director of the Laboratory for Energy and Environment, will visit the MIT Club of Northeast Ohio on Dec 16th.

The Club heartily welcomes Prof. Moniz, a national expert on alternative energy, and invites the Cleveland area community to learn more about how America can use alternative energy to tackle the world’s energy problems.

The event will be held at the Great Lakes Science Center on Wednesday, December 16th, 2009. Cocktails with passed hors d’oeuvres begin at 6pm, followed by a seated dinner at 7pm. Dr. Zhao Gang is the Vice Director of the Renewable Energy and New Energy International Cooperation Planning Office of the Ministry of Science and Technology and National Development and Reform Commission. This agency is responsible for international policy, R&D, investment in technology, and for advancing the development and application of new and renewable energy technologies in China and around the world. Recently, Dr. Zhao has been accompanying China’s Ministry of Science and Technology Minister Wan Gang on his official visit to the U.S.

NorTech transitions Nano-Network initiative to PolymerOhio

Today NorTech, the champion for high tech industry growth in Northeast Ohio, announced it will transition operations of its Nano-Network initiative to PolymerOhio, a statewide organization that accelerates commercialization activities across a wide range of applications in the polymer and advanced materials industries.

Since 2005, NorTech has been supporting, staffing and managing the Nano-Network. Over the past four years, the Nano-Network has been active in educating the public about nanotechnology and related issues; communicating Northeast Ohio’s role in the nanotechnology industry at local, state, and national levels; sponsoring and supporting activities to expand nanotechnology commercialization efforts in Northeast Ohio and abroad; and advocating for resources and funding to continue nanotechnology business and research in Northeast Ohio.

Major Nano-Network programs have included the Annual Nano Week, Nano-App Summit, Nano Medicine Summit, Nano Business Idea Competition, Nanovate, “Nano 101” seminars, Nano Manufacturer’s Forum and the Northeast Ohio Nanotechnology Report.

The decision to transfer Nano-Network operations is a result of NorTech’s strategic planning process that was completed in mid 2008. While nanotechnology will continue to be integral to NorTech’s focus on industry building and technology commercialization, PolymerOhio is better positioned to now manage the organization and carry the nanotechnology message statewide in Ohio.

“The Nano-Network has made a great and important impact on Northeast Ohio to-date. We have certainly increased our region’s national and international visibility and credibility in the nanotechnology arena; attracted external investment and talent as a result; and helped our business and academic communities cultivate collaborations and stimulate commercialization. I am confident that with PolymerOhio’s leadership, the Nano-Network will continue to be successful with the added benefit of now promoting and linking nanotechnology statewide,” said Alexis Abramson, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Northeast Ohio Nano-Network and Associate Professor at Case Western Reserve University.

PolymerOhio’s connections in the polymer and advanced materials industries with potential collaborators/partners, researchers, suppliers, customers, and economic development resources will help to broaden the geographic scope of Nano-Network’s activities to be statewide. Additionally, PolymerOhio supports various events throughout the state that further enhance connections across a broad range of nanotechnology-related applications.

“I appreciate NorTech’s leadership and efforts over the past four years to make Nano-Network one of the best-known privately funded, ‘grass roots’ nanotechnology organizations in the U.S. I look forward to building upon the group’s success by mobilizing the resources and connections of Ohio’s advanced materials industry to encourage adoption of nanotechnology throughout the state of Ohio,” said Wayne Earley, President and CEO of PolymerOhio.

Building on the momentum of a highly successful 2009 program, that realized an outstanding number of groundbreaking nominations and drew a capacity audience of more than 375 event attendees, NorTech is pleased to continue its partnership with Crain’s Cleveland Business to host the 2010 NorTech Innovation Awards.

The Innovation Awards program celebrates innovation in Northeast Ohio by seeking out the most exciting and impactful innovations from companies, entrepreneurs, universities, and non-profit organizations throughout the region and honoring those innovative individuals and organizations who have transformed their creative ideas into reality. Innovation is alive and well here in Northeast Ohio! We intend to demonstrate that fact by showcasing the region’s best examples of innovation for all to see and appreciate and aspire to.

Fund for Our Economic Future awards NorTech $1.7 million grant for Advanced Energy Initiative

On September 1, the Fund for Our Economic Future voted to award NorTech a grant for as much as $1.7 million over two years to accelerate commercial activity, job creation and capital attraction in the advanced energy industry. NorTech, the Northeast Ohio Technology Coalition, champions growth in the region’s high-tech economy and last year identified advanced energy as a key focus area for its work. The new initiative was developmened in partnership with The Cleveland Foundation and builds on the foundation’s leadership role in developing the region’s advanced energy industry. The initiative is now further bolstered by the support of the Fund for Our Economic Future. The advanced energy initiative will have two primary roles:

Build stronger connections among companies, institutions of higher education and the public sector to accelerate and strengthen the development of new commercial opportunities, expand existing companies, develop and attract new companies and attract more state and federal support for the industry.
Lead or support select advanced energy projects that have the potential to create more commercial activity, generate jobs and attract investments to the region.

NorTech Chairman Attends Energy Leadership Briefing at White House

Earlier today NorTech Chairman Les Vinney was among a select group of regional and national energy leaders convened by the White House Office of Public Engagement to discuss the nation’s energy future. Presenters and participants from the Obama Administration included Commerce Secretary Gary Locke; Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack; Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy at the Department of Energy, Cathy Zoi; and White House staff.

The goal of the Energy Leadership Briefing was to provide participants with an update on the Obama Administration’s advanced energy and climate change legislation to create a clean energy economy, spur job growth and reduce the nation’s dependence on foreign oil. White House staff also sought input from participants on how the federal government can help regions and states accelerate their advanced energy initiatives to generate long-term economic impact.

Mr. Vinney was invited to participate in the Energy Leadership Briefing due his position on NorTech’s Board of Directors. In the coming weeks NorTech will launch an advanced energy initiative, in collaboration with The Cleveland Foundation and Fund for Our Economic Future, to accelerate growth in Northeast Ohio’s advanced energy industry. NorTech has been working with the Greater Cleveland Partnership and others to raise the awareness of Northeast Ohio’s advanced energy strengths with lawmakers in the State of Ohio as well as Washington DC.

NorTech Introduces Advanced Energy Initiative at Regional Events in Elyria, Akron, Warren, Cleveland, and Mansfield

NorTech will be hosting a series of events to present its Advanced Energy Initiative to the region. The initiative, created in partnership with The Cleveland Foundation, aims to accelerate growth in Northeast Ohio’s advanced energy industry. NorTech plans to gather input from the regional meetings to further shape and refine the advanced energy initiative as it continues to scale up and gain momentum. There will also be an opportunity to meet NorTech’s advanced energy team and network with local business leaders and other like-minded advanced energy professionals in the region.

Who should attend:
Anyone who is currently engaged in the advanced energy industry, including: small or large companies; academic institutions; investors; entrepreneurs; economic development, non profit or philanthropic organizations; and local, regional, state or federal government representatives. We also strongly encourage individuals to attend who are not currently involved in the advanced energy industry but have an interest in advanced energy and promise it holds for Northeast Ohio’s future.
