NorTech will host a half day intensive grant writing workshop on October 13, 2009 at Corporate College East from 9 am to 2 pm to help prospective grant applicants develop the skills necessary to write competitive grant proposals for Ohio’s Third Frontier. The workshop will prepare individuals to submit proposals for Ohio Third Frontier RFPs for the Sensors and Advanced Materials Programs which will be released in October. A total of $20 million will be available in this round; $10 million for Sensors and $10 million for Advanced Materials.

NorTech transitions Nano-Network initiative to PolymerOhio

Today NorTech, the champion for high tech industry growth in Northeast Ohio, announced it will transition operations of its Nano-Network initiative to PolymerOhio, a statewide organization that accelerates commercialization activities across a wide range of applications in the polymer and advanced materials industries.

Since 2005, NorTech has been supporting, staffing and managing the Nano-Network. Over the past four years, the Nano-Network has been active in educating the public about nanotechnology and related issues; communicating Northeast Ohio’s role in the nanotechnology industry at local, state, and national levels; sponsoring and supporting activities to expand nanotechnology commercialization efforts in Northeast Ohio and abroad; and advocating for resources and funding to continue nanotechnology business and research in Northeast Ohio.

Major Nano-Network programs have included the Annual Nano Week, Nano-App Summit, Nano Medicine Summit, Nano Business Idea Competition, Nanovate, “Nano 101” seminars, Nano Manufacturer’s Forum and the Northeast Ohio Nanotechnology Report.

The decision to transfer Nano-Network operations is a result of NorTech’s strategic planning process that was completed in mid 2008. While nanotechnology will continue to be integral to NorTech’s focus on industry building and technology commercialization, PolymerOhio is better positioned to now manage the organization and carry the nanotechnology message statewide in Ohio.

“The Nano-Network has made a great and important impact on Northeast Ohio to-date. We have certainly increased our region’s national and international visibility and credibility in the nanotechnology arena; attracted external investment and talent as a result; and helped our business and academic communities cultivate collaborations and stimulate commercialization. I am confident that with PolymerOhio’s leadership, the Nano-Network will continue to be successful with the added benefit of now promoting and linking nanotechnology statewide,” said Alexis Abramson, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Northeast Ohio Nano-Network and Associate Professor at Case Western Reserve University.

PolymerOhio’s connections in the polymer and advanced materials industries with potential collaborators/partners, researchers, suppliers, customers, and economic development resources will help to broaden the geographic scope of Nano-Network’s activities to be statewide. Additionally, PolymerOhio supports various events throughout the state that further enhance connections across a broad range of nanotechnology-related applications.

Building on the momentum of a highly successful 2009 program, that realized an outstanding number of groundbreaking nominations and drew a capacity audience of more than 375 event attendees, NorTech is pleased to continue its partnership with Crain’s Cleveland Business to host the 2010 NorTech Innovation Awards.

The Innovation Awards program celebrates innovation in Northeast Ohio by seeking out the most exciting and impactful innovations from companies, entrepreneurs, universities, and non-profit organizations throughout the region and honoring those innovative individuals and organizations who have transformed their creative ideas into reality. Innovation is alive and well here in Northeast Ohio! We intend to demonstrate that fact by showcasing the region’s best examples of innovation for all to see and appreciate and aspire to.

We are now accepting nominations for the 2010 NorTech Innovation Awards. Please help us find the best innovations in the region by encouraging the innovators that you know to apply. Fund for Our Economic Future awards NorTech $1.7 million grant for Advanced Energy Initiative

On September 1, the Fund for Our Economic Future voted to award NorTech a grant for as much as $1.7 million over two years to accelerate commercial activity, job creation and capital attraction in the advanced energy industry. NorTech, the Northeast Ohio Technology Coalition, champions growth in the region’s high-tech economy and last year identified advanced energy as a key focus area for its work. The new initiative was developmened in partnership with The Cleveland Foundation and builds on the foundation’s leadership role in developing the region’s advanced energy industry. The initiative is now further bolstered by the support of the Fund for Our Economic Future. The advanced energy initiative will have two primary roles:

Build stronger connections among companies, institutions of higher education and the public sector to accelerate and strengthen the development of new commercial opportunities, expand existing companies, develop and attract new companies and attract more state and federal support for the industry.
Lead or support select advanced energy projects that have the potential to create more commercial activity, generate jobs and attract investments to the region.
